Typing Classes in Dublin for Children with Dyslexia or Dyspraxia

If handwriting is slow, tiring or hard to read, typing can give your child another way to get their ideas down — for homework, schoolwork and, later, exams. Searsol runs after-school touch typing classes across Dublin (and in Meath and Kildare), with a warm, tutor-led approach that suits children with dyslexia, dyspraxia (DCD), dysgraphia, or simply poor handwriting.

We teach a practical keyboard skill, step by step, so your child can work more independently on a computer.

Who these classes are for

Parents usually come to us when their child:

  • Has dyslexia and finds writing by hand slow or draining
  • Has dyspraxia / DCD and struggles with handwriting control or fatigue
  • Has dysgraphia or messy, inconsistent handwriting
  • Is preparing for, or already has, a laptop exemption / RACE arrangement for Junior or Leaving Cert
  • Simply needs a calmer, clearer way to produce written work on a keyboard

Classes are aimed at children from about eight years upwards, including teenagers. Beginners are welcome — no prior typing experience is needed.

What happens in a Searsol typing class

Each week your child attends a tutor-led class at a local centre. The tutor watches posture and technique, keeps progress on track, and helps them build accuracy before speed.

Between classes they can practise at home on Typewiz — the same programme used in class — so learning continues in short, manageable sessions. This hybrid model (centre + home) is especially useful during mid-terms and holidays when centre classes pause.

Classes follow the school term (typically September to May/June, depending on the centre). Some months have three class dates, some four or five.

Free trial assessment (1 hour)

Before you commit, book a free 1-hour trial assessment at your nearest centre. Your child joins a class session; you drop them off and collect them at the end.

Afterwards the tutor shares a short report covering:

  • How many exercises they completed
  • Average accuracy and words per minute (WPM)
  • Potential course grade band — Bronze, Silver or Gold

That gives you a clear picture of where they are starting and what a realistic next step looks like.

Why typing helps when handwriting is hard

For many children with dyslexia or dyspraxia, the physical effort of handwriting takes energy away from spelling, planning and getting ideas onto the page. Learning to touch type — using all fingers and knowing the keys without looking — can reduce that friction so they can focus more on the content of their work.

It is a life skill for school, homework and later study or work — not a cure for a learning difference. Progress is gradual and individual; the free trial report helps set expectations from day one.

Short FAQ

Are the classes suitable for teenagers?

Yes. Primary and secondary students are welcome, including those with dyslexia, dyspraxia (DCD), dysgraphia or other learning differences.

Do you need a diagnosis?

No. Families come for many reasons — diagnosed needs, RACE/laptop arrangements, or simply handwriting that is slow or tiring.

Where do I see the class fee?

On our FAQ and on each centre page. This page focuses on the free trial and finding a centre.

How long is the free trial?

One hour, during a normal class slot. You receive a short report on exercises, accuracy, WPM and potential Bronze / Silver / Gold.

Do we need to bring a laptop?

Some centres (including Goatstown, Killester and Swords) ask you to bring a laptop. Check the location page for your centre.
