This centre doesn’t have a computer room so you must bring your laptop to the course centre.

The Searsol centre enables children from the age of eight upwards to learn the skill of touch typing. Our unique training method focuses on enabling children to work independently, giving them confidence in their typing abilities. They progress through small steps to gradually develop their accuracy and typing speed.  Unlike traditional tuition, Searsol fosters students’ skill in self-learning, building confidence and lessening reliance on a teacher.

Our typing course is suitable for all children from the age of eight upwards. We work with children that have learning differences such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or other learning differences.

Your child will be initially assessed by the Searsol tutor to determine what they can achieve on our typing course. Your child will visit their local Searsol centre once a week, where their Tutor will observe their typing and ensure that they are using the right technique. Searsol’s aim is to develop each child into a confident, independent and enthusiastic learner

Our Swords centre is located in Holywell Community Centre.

My name is Donnagha Vaughan, and I am the Tutor at our Searsol Swords centre.

Education is both my passion and my vocation. Having graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology with a Business degree. After working for thirteen years in the technology industry, I decided to pursue my lifelong ambition of working in education.

I joined Searsol as a Tutor delivering after-school touch typing and computer classes to children. During my years in this role, I garnered a very deep knowledge of the Searsol typing courses. My daily interaction with students enabled me to develop a genuine appreciation for what can be achieved through the Searsol typing classes. I have witnessed first-hand thousands of Searsol students develop their confidence and typing skills through strategic, individualised instruction in the Searsol typing classes.

My vastly experienced team and I are passionate about ensuring that every student that walks through the doors of our Searsol centre is given the best opportunity possible to reach their potential. We aim for each student on every class day to leave the centre with an improvement in their typing skills, giving them the confidence to use these newly acquired typing skills in their daily routine.

We look forward to welcoming you into the centre as you begin your own Searsol journey.

Typing classes for children and teenagers
Typing classes for children and teenagers

Do you offer typing classes for teenagers?

Yes! Our typing classes are suitable for teenagers too.

We work with students of different ages and abilities, including teenagers who want to improve their typing speed, accuracy and confidence.

Our classes are particularly helpful for teenagers who find handwriting difficult or tiring, including students with dyslexia, dyspraxia (DCD), dysgraphia or other learning differences.

What will my teenager learn?

Students learn touch typing – using all their fingers and learning where each key is without looking at the keyboard.

As they progress, they develop:

  • ⌨️ Faster, more accurate typing
  • 🎯 Better keyboard confidence
  • 📝 A practical skill for homework and schoolwork
  • 💻 Greater independence when using a computer
  • 🚀 A skill that can support them through secondary school and beyond

Will the classes feel too young for a teenager?

No. Our programme is designed to keep students motivated as they develop their skills. Teenagers can work at their own level and progress through increasingly challenging lessons and activities.

Is typing especially useful for teenagers with dyslexia or dyspraxia?

Absolutely. For some students, handwriting can be slow, tiring or difficult to read. Developing strong keyboard skills can give them another way to complete written work and communicate their ideas.

Are the classes suitable for secondary-school students?

Yes. We welcome secondary-school students and can support beginners as well as teenagers who already have some keyboard experience.

Can my teenager practise at home?

Yes. Students can access Typewiz at home, allowing them to practise between classes and continue building their speed and accuracy.

What if my teenager is a complete beginner?

That’s absolutely fine. No previous typing experience is required. Students start at an appropriate level and build their skills step by step.

Typing isn’t just a school skill – it’s a skill they’ll use for years to come.

The fee for our typing classes is €80 per month. This includes both in-class instruction and home access for revision or in case your child is unable to attend a session. The necessary passcode for home access can be obtained from the Course Tutor.

Our academic year spans from September through the end of May or June, depending on the centre. We offer a flexible schedule, hosting three to five monthly classes. The course fee remains consistent every month regardless of the number of classes held in a given month.

Our classes follow a hybrid model, combining traditional classroom settings with at-home learning opportunities. This hybrid approach ensures comprehensive learning experiences for students.

Home-based learning sessions are scheduled during specific times throughout the year to accommodate various events, including Halloween, Christmas, Midterms, Easter, and Bank Holidays. During these periods when our typing classes are not on in the classroom, students can access Typewiz from home using their unique passcode. If you need your child’s passcode, simply contact your class tutor or contact us via email.

We strive to provide a balanced and engaging learning environment that maximises student learning potential throughout the academic year.

The free trial assessment is an hour long and takes place as part of the class.  Just drop your child off to the class and then come back at the end of the class. The class tutor will show a report on how your child got on detailing the following:

  • How many exercises they did.
  • Their average accuracy and word-per-minute
  •  What potential grade they can achieve on the course – Bronze, Silver or Gold grade.
Searsol is a participating provider for the National Childcare Scheme (NCS).

The National Childcare Scheme is a fantastic initiative designed to empower young people up to the age of 15, enabling them to make a positive impact on their lives and communities. Through the NCS program, your child will have access to a diverse range of experiences and opportunities aimed at their personal development.

By registering your child for the NCS scheme and obtaining approval, you’ll receive a payment for course attendance. The rate of payment is determined by your income, with a guaranteed minimum subsidy of €1.40 per class fee.

To check your entitlement and estimate your potential subsidy, you can use the subsidy calculator. Please ensure that you input only one hour of childcare required per week to determine your weekly rate.

Once you’ve successfully obtained approval for the NCS scheme, kindly email us with the following information:

1. Child’s Full Name
2. Date of Birth
3. Chick Number

We will reduce your monthly course fee going forward by the approved amount, ensuring that your child can fully benefit from the NCS program.
